Chief Edwin Clark, the former Federal Commissioner for Information and a prominent South-South leader, has unveiled the turbulent history between two influential political figures from Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amaechi
According to a report from the Vanguard, Clark detailed how Wike’s political ascent is largely attributable to Amaechi’s backing. Amaechi first appointed Wike as his Chief of Staff and later endorsed him for a ministerial position under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
Clark recounted that their relationship deteriorated dramatically when Wike allegedly tried to seize power by force, plotting to impeach Amaechi and the Speaker of the House of Assembly. This scheme reportedly resulted in severe violence, with one Assembly member suffering critical injuries.
Clark stated, “Who made you (Wike) Governor of Rivers States, today you don’t want to see the man? He wrote about Peter Odili but later now he said that if he does anything against Odili, God should kill him. Then, Amaechi made him Chief of Staff. When he quarreled with him, Ameachi now recommended him to be appointed Minister, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo agreed.”
He continued, “One day, with the approval of the presidency, Wike reportedly instructed security forces to support a group of five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in their attempt to impeach the Speaker, Otelemaba Amachree. The plan was then to proceed with impeaching Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
The situation devolved into chaos; there was a violent altercation, the mace was broken, and one member named Chidi was gravely injured and had to be flown abroad for treatment.
