Rivers Crisis:Police Started Beating Our Women, Shooting Teargas At Pregnant Women – Chijioke Ihunwu

According to report from PUNCH news. A medical outreach program in Eliozu village, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, turned violent on Wednesday as supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara clashed. The incident occurred at the Eliozu Health Center, where state Ministry of Health personnel were providing services to women.

According to reports, trouble began when followers of Martin Amaewhule, a factional Speaker of the state House of Assembly and ally of Wike, arrived at the scene. Amaewhule’s residence is nearby, but supporters of Chijioke Ihunwo, a loyalist of Governor Fubara and chairman of the Obio/Akpor LGA Caretaker Committee, blocked their entry, sparking a heated debate that escalated into violence.

Stones were thrown, and the outreach program was disrupted. Police intervened, dispersing the crowd with tear gas, which injured a baby who was later hospitalized and recovered. The outreach was relocated to a state-owned medical facility in Port Harcourt.

Ihunwo accused Amaewhule of leading the disruption with police support, stating, “Martin Amaewhule led some security men to disrupt a program by the Ministry of Health… Policemen came and started beating up our women, shooting teargas at pregnant women.”

Ihunwo called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, saying, “Obio/Akpor Local Government Area will not be under siege… We want the FCT Minister to concentrate on his job in Abuja and leave our dear Governor alone.” The incident highlights the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, with factions loyal to Wike and Fubara engaging in violent clashes….Viêw_ More
