The community leader who confirmed the incident revealed that the farmers were on their way home when the bandits attacked them, killing two. He revealed that the bandits came from Kurutu Forest, close to a neighboring Azzara village. The money demanded from the farmers was also demanded from farmers in other communities.
As reported by The Daily Trust News, the community leader said, “One of the relatives of the bereaved families informed me this morning that the bandits called and said the reason they killed two among the farmers was because they refused to pay the N100,000 demanded from the farmers last month.”
Prior to the raid on their camp, the bandits allegedly drove out the local farmers and demanded that each pay a ransom of N100,000, plus foodstuffs and drugs, in order for the bandits to allow them do their farms.
According to reports, the farmers collectively paid N6.7 million, including foodstuffs and drugs, to the bandits, after which some of the farmers were permitted to go back to their farms and resume their farming business.
