Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed concerns about the feasibility of implementing the newly assented N70,000 minimum wage, citing lean allocation to the state.
According to the report by Punch on Wednesday, the governor made the statement during a meeting with stakeholders on the planned nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest at the Gombe Government House.
Yahaya said that meeting the minimum wage requirement would be challenging, and that he suspects many other states will face similar difficulties.
He however commended the Federal Government for donating rice to states, despite Gombe’s delay in receiving the essential supplies. He said, “We are yet to receive the Federal Government’s 20 trucks of rice to Gombe State.”
The governor stressed the state’s commitment to providing relief to its citizens, citing previous palliative distributions and ongoing investments in human capital development, education, health, and agriculture.
Speaking further, he emphasized the importance of peaceful and orderly conduct during the protest, acknowledging the role of civil society organisations, labour unions, and traders in maintaining social stability and economic resilience.
The planned protest which is scheduled to start on August 1 has been gathering momentum among Nigerians, although some government officials have been trying to dissuade the protesters from embarking on the protest.
Yusuf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Gombe Network of Civil Society Organisations, presented a list of demands, urging the governor to release the list of stocked palliatives.
