4 Days To Protest: Activists Adamant, Opposition Grows As Regional Bodies Disagree Over Protest

As the nationwide protest organized by some youths is set to begin on Thursday, August 1, 2024, activists are steadfast in their commitment. The protest, named #EndBadGovernance, aims to address economic hardships and has generated significant tension.

According to a Punch newspaper report, activists Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) of the Take It Back Movement and Mr. Deji Adeyanju of Concerned Nigerians have asserted their intention to proceed with the protest, which will run for 10 days across various locations.

Regional and religious groups, including Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, PANDEF, and the Yoruba Council of Elders, have expressed reservations. They argue that while acknowledging the economic struggles, caution is necessary.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has advised Igbo youths against participating, citing potential negative repercussions. PANDEF and YCE have urged constructive dialogue with the government, while Afenifere emphasized the need to avoid repeating the destructive outcomes of the #EndSARS protests.

Christian groups, such as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), have also voiced concerns. They warn that the protest might lead to violence and further hardship.

CAN has called for government action to alleviate poverty and reduce the cost of governance, suggesting dialogue as a preferable alternative to protest.

In contrast, the Igbo National Council supports the protest, urging reductions in fuel prices and food costs.

Other groups, like the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders and ASPAMDA, have distanced themselves from the protest, citing potential chaos and advocating for patience and engagement with the government.

The protest, although recognized as a fundamental right, faces widespread debate on its potential impacts and the best path forward…..Viêw_ More
