According to Channels Television, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, addressed the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August, stating that the government opposes the initiative. Uzodimma characterized the timing of these protests as inappropriate given the current economic climate and ongoing efforts by the federal government to address economic issues.
During a briefing with State House correspondents on Wednesday, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Uzodimma reiterated the government’s position against the protests. He emphasized the importance of preserving national stability and cautioned that protests could exacerbate the existing economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians.
Uzodimma questioned the effectiveness of the planned protests, pointing out that the purpose of demonstrations is typically to demand action on specific issues. He implied that the current protests might not lead to constructive outcomes, given the government’s ongoing measures to improve the economic situation.
The federal government has already appealed to Nigerians to reconsider participating in the nationwide protests, assuring them that actionable steps are being implemented to mitigate economic hardships. The government aims to address the economic challenges through various initiatives, rather than through widespread demonstrations.
Uzodimma urged the public to avoid actions that might further destabilize the nation or worsen the economic situation. He suggested that maintaining stability is crucial during periods of economic recession, and protests could potentially hinder progress towards economic recovery.
He said: “Okay, if you are protesting, what do you want the government to do? Because the reason for protests is that they want an issue to be addressed. What are the issues?
So, in my view, I think there is no need to overheat the polity, overheat our environment and put our people in a position where the hardship that is occasioned by economic recession all over the world is further worsened. So, I advise against the protests…..Viêw _ More
