Muhammad Okafor, an Igbo Muslim who got married to Zainab Aliyu SheShe, a Hausa-Fulani, has decided to take their love story to the public after featuring in a documentary posted by Daily Trust.
Muhammad, who claims to be from Imo State, explains that he embraced Islam in 2018 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when he was in his third year of studies. He hid his religion from his family for four years because he was scared that if they knew about it, it might affect his relationship with them.
However, Muhammad further explains that the road to his marriage with Zainab Aliyu SheShe has been tough, and even during the marriage, none of his family members came to support and stand for him.
Zainab Aliyu SheShe, who is from Kano State, also spoke to the camera about the marriage with Muhammad, explaining that the road to their marriage was both hard and easy for her. She received support from some part of her family but was questioned by others about her choice of an Igbo man when there are many Hausa men she could have married.
Despite the challenges, the couple testifies that they have been living in peace since their marriage and encourages people to embrace inter-tribal marriages, emphasizing that deep love can overcome any cultural or religious differences.
They want to show the world that their union is a testament to the power of love and acceptance, and that there is nothing inherently bad about inter-tribal marriages, as long as there is deep love between the couple.
