General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), former military president of Nigeria, has expressed his support for the full reintroduction of Religious Knowledge in public primary and secondary schools nationwide. According to VANGUARD, Babangida emphasized the importance of this measure in restoring societal order and moral values.

His endorsement came during a meeting with the Executive members of the Niger State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by Chairman Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna.

During the meeting, Babangida assured the CAN delegation of his commitment to advocating for the reintroduction of Religious Knowledge in schools. He pledged to discuss this initiative with President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago, underscoring the significance of religious teachings in fostering unity and mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims. Babangida reminisced about his own secondary school years in the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting how Religious Knowledge played a pivotal role in promoting harmony among students of different faiths.

He lamented the perceived decline of moral values and unity that religious teachings once fostered, stressing the importance of reintegrating these teachings into the educational curriculum.Babangida commended the efforts of the Niger State CAN in instilling moral values among youth.

He expressed confidence that their advocacy would garner government support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace and ethical conduct in society. The former military president praised the leadership of CAN and acknowledged their dedication to improving the moral fabric of the nation.

Babangida reiterated his belief that reintroducing Religious Knowledge in schools is crucial for shaping a better future for Nigeria. He highlighted the role of education in molding young minds towards tolerance, respect, and ethical behaviour.
