State Govts Should Create State Economic Councils And Allow LG To Participate In Them – Femi Falana

On 12th July, 2024 the Nigerian Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana during an interview with Channels Television while reacting to the ruling by the Supreme Court, granting the seven hundred and seventy-four Local Government Areas of the country financial autonomy, urged the State Governments to create State Economic Councils and allowed the Local Government to participate in them, just like they were part of the Federal Economic Council.

According to Channels Television, the Nigerian Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana said “The state’s electoral commissions are manned by appointees of the state governors. And what they have done over the years is to manipulate the local government elections in a way, that only the candidates of the ruling parties would be declared the winners. Now, local governments would be expected to fix some schools, tar some roads, and even pay some workers. So, it is not that state governments will no longer participate in the affairs of the local governments, the state governments should create state economic councils and allow the local government to participate in them, just like they are part of the federal economic council.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana added that a lot depends on the good citizens of the country because it was difficult to talk about the autonomy of the Local Government. He also added that the judgment had to be studied by the State Governors so that everybody would appreciate that what the Supreme Court had done was to promote public accountability at the grassroots level….Discover _More
