According to Vanguard, a 28-year-old man, Uchenna Eziekwe, has narrated how he convinced his wife, 22-year-old Chineye, to sell their only child, a two-year-old baby boy, to raise money for him to leave the country to seek greener pastures abroad.

Uchenna, who said he is a construction site labourer, was arrested alongside his wife on July 9, while he was making enquiries about how to sell their baby boy at the Isolo General Hospital, Lagos.

The Lagos State Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hudenyin, disclosed that the police, acting on a tip off, arrested the couple at the hospital and rescued the baby who they had gone to sell.

SP Hundeyin added that when the police interrogated the couple, they said they decided to sell the baby to enable the man to travel to Canada.

Meanwhile, Uchenna, who spoke with newsmen, said the decision to sell the child was his, blaming the country’s economic hardship for it.

“It was a difficult decision, but we had no choice but to sell our baby. We felt it would be better to sell him to someone who can take care of him than to allow him to die of hunger.

“I muted the idea and convinced my wife. We had to do it because of hardship. I am a labourer, I go to construction sites to look for work while my wife does nothing….Discover _More
