I Will Appeal To The FG To Consider Making A Case For LG Election To Be Conducted By INEC- Orji Kalu

On 11th July, 2024 the Nigerian Senator representing Abia State North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu while reacting to the ruling by the Supreme Court, granting the seven hundred and seventy-four Local Government Areas of the country financial autonomy, appealed to the Federal Government to consider making a case for Local Government elections to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) instead of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) because that would further strengthen the autonomy of the Local Governments and reduce the pressure on the State Governments.

According to the Daily Post, the Nigerian Senator representing Abia State North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said “The local government chairmen built roads and gave contracts to local contractors. The chairmen were able to take full responsibility for what happened in their local government, and crime was reduced to the barest minimum. I will also appeal to the Federal Government to consider making a case for local government elections to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) instead of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC). This will further strengthen the autonomy of the local governments and reduce the pressure on the state governments.”

The former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu added that the Supreme Court judgment on the autonomy of Local Governments was one that should be hailed and applauded because granting full autonomy to the seven hundred and seventy four Local Government Areas in the country would be like a call for an end to security challenges, kidnappings, and banditry that were facing the country. He also appealed to the thirty-six State Governors across the country to accept the judgment of the Supreme Court as a victory for democracy, a victory for themselves, and a victory for the good citizens of the country….See _More
