Hamas Proposes Independent Government For Postwar Gaza, West Bank In Ceasefire Talks

Hamas has advanced a proposal during ceasefire negotiations suggesting the establishment of an independent government comprising non-partisan figures to administer Gaza and the West Bank in the aftermath of the recent conflict, according to The Times of Israel.

Husam Badran, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, articulated the proposal, highlighting its intent to ensure Palestinian sovereignty without external interference.

“We proposed that a non-partisan national competency government manage Gaza and the West Bank after the war,” stated Badran in a statement regarding the ongoing negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States between Israel and Hamas.

Badran emphasized the internal nature of Gaza’s administration post-war, asserting Hamas’s firm stance against involving external parties in discussions about the region’s future.

An anonymous Hamas official informed AFP that the proposal for a non-partisan government was tabled during negotiations with mediators. The official indicated that this potential government would oversee Gaza and the West Bank initially, with the ultimate goal of facilitating general elections.
