When Jonathan Wanted To Remove Fuel Subsidy, The Soyinkas Of This World Occupied Streets-Sunday Oibe

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North-West Zone, Elder Sunday Oibe has stated that Wole Soyinka and many other notable Nigerians protested when former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan wanted to remove fuel subsidy.

The Sun reported that Sunday Oibe stated this in an exclusive interview.

Wole Soyinka, an elder statesman and human rights activist won the Nobel prize in Literature many years ago.

Sunday Oibe, who is also the General Secretary, CAN in the 19 northern states said; “Nigerians are not crying that the subsidy has been removed. Nigerians are not angry that the subsidy has been removed, the timing was wrong”

He added; “when Jonathan wanted to remove fuel subsidy, the Soyinkas of this world occupied streets. If it was implemented that time, we will not be here talking about what we are talking about right now. So I am not against fuel subsidy removal, but I am against the timing”

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North-West Zone, Elder Sunday Oibe stated further; “The timing was wrong. You have taken over power, the first thing that comes to your mind is that the subsidy is gone. And you did not put any palliative in place to cushion the effect.”
