In a report by Vanguard, Clark detailed how Wike’s political ascent was significantly aided by Amaechi.
Clark recounted that Amaechi played a crucial role in Wike’s early political career, first by appointing him as Chief of Staff and later recommending him for a ministerial position during President Obasanjo’s administration. This mentorship, however, eventually turned into a bitter rivalry.
According to Clark, the relationship deteriorated when Wike allegedly attempted to seize power through violent means.
He orchestrated an impeachment attempt against Amaechi and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, which resulted in severe violence and left one member critically injured.
Clark elaborated, saying, “Who made you (Wike) the Governor of Rivers State? Today, you refuse to acknowledge the man. Wike once spoke ill of Peter Odili, but later declared that he would face divine retribution if he acted against Odili.
Amaechi then made him Chief of Staff and, despite their fallout, recommended him for a ministerial position, which President Obasanjo approved.”
He continued, “But what happened? One day, we had the approval of the residency to tell the security people as he got five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, I have their names here, to impeach the speaker, one Otelemaba Amachreee.
Then to later impeach, the governor, Rotimi Ameachi. There was a free-for-all fight. The mace was broken. One of the members called Chidi, not somebody with a part of the mace.
