Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesman Kenneth Okonkwo has strongly criticized Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, in a piece titled “Fallen Democracy,” which was just published.
Veteran actor and political pundit Okonkwo claims that President Tinubu tried to mimic the “Hope 93” campaign of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola in the 2023 presidential race, but finally failed to encapsulate the spirit and integrity of Abiola’s plan.
In an article published by THE SUN, Okonkwo makes the case that democracy is failing in Africa because people who ought to be promoting its ideals are instead focused on gaining favor with dishonest rulers.
He highlights that safeguarding the safety and well-being of Nigeria’s populace is the real test of the country’s commitment to democracy. In his argument, Okonkwo characterizes the recent Democracy Day celebration as tainted by a “express demonstration of State Capture,” calling the government’s choice to install a costly portrait of President Tinubu in Eagle’s Square a token gesture of leadership.
Okonkwo makes the following connection between the goals of the “Hope 93” campaign and the current administration: “The incumbent that is trying to mimic Hope 93 in 2023 is the exact opposite of Abiola.”
He explained the notion that the individuals who competed against Tinubu in the presidential race, such as Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, are now considered political adversaries.
